The first thing Basil wouldn't do is openly challenge Kira like L did drawing attention but through similar methods deduce the location and potential candidates for Kira. After sneakily staking the places out, he'd see Light doing his thing and from there it would be game over.

i Actually did put a lot of thought into this a long while back and it was concluded that Basil, like Batman, and Sherlock Holmes. Would have a relatively easy time catching Kira. for one the death note wouldn't work on him. and Light would never be the wiser to Basil tailing him. There's More.
