One of the solutions proposed is to create a professional register - because, as Bridget Phillipson put it, these staff are professionals. Should we be saying the same of specialist drug / alcohol / recovery workers? Is the government's workforce strategy sufficient? 3/3
Black text on a white background reading: Improving conditions and career pathways: To raise the status of the profession we will work in partnership with the sector to co-design and introduce a new professional register designed to raise the value of the profession, promote continuing professional development and give early educators the recognition they deserve. We will work closely with the sector to establish an evidence-informed career framework to support career progression at all levels, linked to a simpler qualification offer. We are continuing to invest in funding rates to enable providers to recruit and retain great staff, and through the Employment Rights Bill, the Government is delivering the biggest upgrade in employment rights in a generation. We are also exploring how steps to increase flexible working and reduce workloads in schools could be applied in early years settings.

But too often, early years staff feel overworked, overlooked and undervalued. Men are especially underrepresented in the workforce. We want early years to be a career people are proud to start and rewarding to pursue. In the Parliamentary debate on employer National Insurance contributions today, the Minister was clear on the principle guiding their approach. The government will protect its own operation, public corporations & local government. hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2025... 1/3

The approach the Government are taking, which is in line with the approach taken by the previous Government in the health and social care levy, is for the Government to provide support for Departments and other public sector employers for additional employer national insurance contributions. As I said to the hon. Member for North Bedfordshire (Richard Fuller), that means central Government, public corporations and local government. Primary care providers are independent contractors and will therefore not be exempt from the changes.

On a reaction to extremely distressing news, the young prince expects a 'manly' reaction to fight, while Macduff says he needs time to 'feel' (crucially 'as a man'), and Malcolm, having no children, doesn't understand the pain of losing them.

On the desire for a doctor to 'cure' a patient of distress by 'plucking' out a 'rooted sorrow' from their mind.

Had some South African wine with family on Boxing Day and was surprised and interested to see the warning in these specific terms: #alcohol is #addictive. I'm not sure this is exactly how I'd phrase things, but certainly thought-provoking.

A sensible, helpful article that encourages us to look beyond simple and easily identifiable 'villains' like social media if we're thinking about young people's health and wellbeing. I like this section that emphasises the well-known factors that affect mental health.

An interesting journey up to London this morning, with conversations overheard on the train including a long discussion between two 20-something women about their experiences of taking magic mushrooms - then coincidentally as I walked across the Thames I saw this graffiti on Hungerford Bridge.
