I took this picture yesterday at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome. Memorials to Leo XII and Leo XIII. Cardinal Prevost was a frequent visitor to the college (he has many Irish friends), so we should expect Leo XIV to join his predecessors at some point.

Piero della Francesca’s fresco “The Resurrection” survived WW2 when a British artillery officer, an art lover called Tony Clarke, defied orders to protect the building in the Tuscan town of Sansepolcro which houses the masterpiece. The town honoured Clarke with a street name after the war.

If Trump wants to resist calls for the US to be a security backstop, he may simply argue that Article 5 relates only to attacks on NATO territories, rather than an attack on NATO troops in non-NATO territories.
