JERICHO RIDGE is out now and still 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! Here to talk about movies and meet cool people.
Surely this is a solid contender for greatest blood squibs ever in a movie gunfight? Dread to think how long the reset times were! Also worth noting how effectively backlighting works to show the blood. And what a track!

Rewatching DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE. This is McTiernan at the height of his powers. Impeccable big movie/action direction throughout. This is just about the coolest zoom I've ever seen in a film. The camera op deserves a raise!

A BETTER TOMORROW is nearly 40 years old and this scene is still one of the best examples of intercutting between slow motion and 24fps I've ever seen. Works so well, and I think this whole sequence (with the build up and guns in plant pots) is one of the best action set-pieces John Woo's ever done.

Just finished watching Na Hong-jin's THE WAILING. What a film! Incredible atmosphere and stunningly photographed. The shots of scenery and nature are something else. Hopefully this inspires your Wednesday.

Jeremy Saulnier does not fuck about when it comes to his visuals. There's an un-showy, impeccably framed, muscularity to his cinematography that I really appreciate. Not easy to do, but immensely satisfying when you see it done right.

Somehow got to 45 without ever watching The Searchers. So I ordered the 4k from USA. What a film! And such a beautifully restored transfer. I said 'Jesus!' out loud when I saw this kick. Genuinely gnarly bit of fight choreography. Jeffrey Hunter & Ken Curtis really went for it in this sequence.

Rewatched Munich for the first time in years. Not my fave Spielberg by a long shot, but his direction here is some of his very best. It's a masterclass in blocking and shot design. And the scene transitions are so creative and well thought out. Must have been an absolute dream to edit this film.

John Woo really didn't fuck around when it came to shotgun squibs. The amount of pyro and debris in the air is incredible. And now this is getting a 4k blu-ray release courtesy of @shoutstudios.bsky.social The greatest action film ever made!

Saw a clip of Secret Level on Corridor Crew's YouTube and then watched it on Prime. So blown away by the lighting and shot design here. The muzzle flashes and glow in the dark blood are such a creative way to illuminate the scene. Just a really impressive and creative piece of action filmmaking.

Watched VIOLENT NIGHT last night with a big, goofy grin on my face. So funny and some really cool Santa-themed action. The Santa versus Frosty fight is one of my fave fight scenes in ages. Violent, funny and really imaginative. Bravo! A little too long is my only complaint. Should've been 95 mins.

Completely epic practical helicopter crash.

Really cool 'hidden' cut from close up to wide shot. Uses the movement so well to conceal the edit. Had to stop and rewind this a couple of times.

Love this push in & tilt up on Rutger Hauer. What a shot!

Just rewatched THE HITCHER for the first time in about 25 years. Robert Harmon directed the hell out of this film - all the more impressive when you consider that it's his debut feature. This double canon roll is a thing of totally exquisite beauty.

Here's a vfx breakdown by POD (LDN) for JERICHO RIDGE. They did some great work. We had a fairly high number of vfx shots for such a low budget film-something like 340. Mostly screen replacement for dashcams and CCTV, adding snow when it all melted, and actiony stuff like muzzle flashes, sparks etc

For my money, this is the single greatest moment of action choreography and editing ever. Had the widescreen VHS of this as a teenager at school and rewound this with my mate Bob about twenty times on our first viewing. This is the movie that made me want to get into filmmaking. So good!!
