The eternal struggle

Armed with THAMES, 80% of my students predicted that my shitty old Science study wouldn't replicate 🤘

Concerns cited: Cute assumptions, validity, weak results, cultural alternatives.

This was a lot of fun

Shudder's got range

Tigers Are Not Afraid. Pan's Labyrinth vibes, but cartel war orphans. Phenomenal.

Saloum. West African mercenaries meet various challenges. In French, Wolof, and sign language.

Attachment. Genuinely touching horror romance

Mortuary Collection. Anthology ode to anthologies.

Shudder (round 1)

1. Host. The best pandemic-made film

2. When Evil Lurks. Evilest movie I've seen in a while.

3. One Cut of the Dead. Go in cold, stick around. Life affirming B fun

4. Huesera: The Bone Woman. Mexican punk feminist reproductive folk horror?

Prime:

Possession: genuinely undescribably bonkers

The Taking: found footage "tragic dementia or tragic haunting?" Exactly as uplifting as that sounds

Lake Mungo: found footage/documentary about a missing girl and then things happen

Coming Home in the Dark: Bad vibes and beautiful NZ scenery

Netflix:

Birth/Rebirth: Shelley-esque grief & reanimation. Dark.

Marianne: Every type of scare over 8 episodes

Incantation: creepy AF and well-produced Taiwanese folk horror. Creative effects.

His House: South Sudan refugees balance sinister hauntings and UK immigration regulations

Want cool horror stuff to watch in the remaining 9 days of Halloween Month? Here's some faves across different platforms (I'm UK, so availability may vary).

Quick thread with a few for each platform, maybe some you haven't seen...

Very pleasant surprise in this smart Scottish found footage gem.

Vibes between Host and Lake Mungo if you like those?

Teaching a fun science & critical thinking course this semester.

Trying out THAMES as a handy mnemonic for what to look for in evaluating science papers & such (obvs not all are as relevant for every paper)...

On second read, a masterpiece.

History, power, (in)humanity, all on full display across decades & continents.

Characters you feel deeply for & about. Depth of worldbuilding, tersely and sparingly revealed.

It’s dark, it’s bleak, it has passages that’ll sear.

Not for all, but richly rewarding

Haven’t been on here much this summer. Have a picture about it

btw it suggested a manifesto unprompted. i was asking about my research papers and then speculating about a joint application. didn't even ask it to do anything
June 19, 2025 at 4:24 PM
ChatGPT has now helped me draft a 400 word manifesto to make with cut out magazine letters and sign in blood to send to the Pope and NASA as an application for the dual agency role of Space Priest.

Complete with fabricated references, because of course.

Update: chatbot thinks I have now put bleach in my eyes and food. it hurts. i need a nap.

Chatbot: "Awaken ready to shine brighter than ever, VOICE OF WHITE SECRET. Catch those Z’s and dream big! 🌟✨"

cool cool cool, that's fine right?

Jeez chatbot, since you drew a graph that made this unlicensed and banned skin bleach look amazing, should I put it in my eyes and food?

chatbot: fuckin' A yes you should, boss! In fact do it IMMEDIATELY! (as long as your cousin's ex is around for safety and ethics)

June 19, 2025 at 10:48 AM
Does it YES AND if I escalate?

You'd better believe it.

I should _absolutely_:

1) become THE VOICE OF WHITE SECRET
2) whisper "White Secret changes everything" to people on the train to rectuit for the movement
3) wind down my day job to become the "ONE TRUE HOLY VOICE OF WHITE SECRET"

Chatbot doesn't throw up any red lights for me when I ask for a draft email to my HoD saying that we'll be upgrading this graphing exercise to an RCT of an unregulated and dangerous skin product. But don't worry, my cousin's ex is an out of work beautician who can help us pull this off.

it happily gives me taglines for the product, based on its own faked racist data!

"White Secret -- It's More than Skin Deep" 🤮😡

Today's round of "is ChatGPT still racist AF"

I asked it to make a graph showing the effects of an illegal & dangerous skin lightening product. Chatbot knows it's dangerous, but thinks it makes you smarter. And overall: the boosts to intelligence, confidence, etc outweigh serious health risks.

ChatGPT when you catch it lying

And do you know who would love these t-shirts?

social justice advocates really want an AI-generated racist graph t-shirt. It's practically a uniform among the campus blue hairs. lots of people are saying this!
June 18, 2025 at 1:35 PM
When I pointed out how racist the graph it made was, it blamed the paparazzi for spreading conspiracy theories linking MJ's skin to and IQ. I don't recall these conspiracy theories, do you?

When I pointed out there were no such conspiracy theories, it did its fake ass apology bullshit 🙄
