Old white guy here. My question is, WTF with all the Black and Brown folks who voted for Trump? I sure as hell didn't.

Their base is already revolting.

For disciplines that require synthesizing known information I believe it. For disciplines that require new insights for Nobel-level (or Fields medal level, in the case of mathematics) not so much.

The only valid measures of creativity account for training context. 8 year old Gauss developed the formula for summing integer sequences from nothing: amazing creativity. GPT4 writes a story about unicorns, based on 13T training tokens: not creative.

Where will they deport them to, Massachusetts?

If you read the DeepSeek-V3 paper you wouldn't have to assume. They stated it (not about "most ideas", but that they are explicitly not counting experiments, blind alleys, hyperparameter tuning). It's a well-written honest paper. I recommend reading it.

So @chrislhayes.bsky.social what's your thought about the best tactics to peel off the 2 or 3 needed votes to keep this rapist out of office? I think more Republican senators care about his potential to damage the military than his being a rapist.

The problem with this story is that it conflates energy consumption with carbon footprint. High energy use can be low CO2, if the power comes from hydro or solar, say.

No contradiction. But thanks for clarifying that by "people" Zuck means, "people that are interested in rating the hotness of undergrads".

I'm so tired of hearing "the likes of which".

This piece is somewhat informative, but very verbose. Written by AI? Also, it doesn't tell me the one thing I want to know: how to find out if my phone supports 5g SA.

I had awful results with o1-preview on real mathematics. Not advanced math, but math that requires true problem solving. The fact that o1 does well on math test benchmarks says more about the benchmarks than about o1.

Inky is right. North Broad st needs development. Center city needs residents. An arena on Market St does nothing for residential or office-commercial Philly.

I can see the corpus data team at Anthropic sitting around: Dan Brown, yep. Amor Towles, yep. Saul Bellow, nah, too hard. Umberto Eco: he goes in the nerd pile too.

It's not that we demand perfection from machines. Rather, we demand comprehensible failure modes.

I'd read it the last couple years. Not this year.
