I agree that the Mercator projection is bad for everyday, non-navigational purposes. I'm not convinced that we should default to an equal-area projection. Shape is another important quality depicted! This is the Robinson projection which sacrifices relative area somewhat for better shapes. Balanced.

At some point people are going to have to admit that AI tools are already incredibly useful and likely to become even more so, even in highly intellectual areas.

I see this sentiment a lot and I often agree with it. What made me realize how nuanced this is the fact that Japan has a privatized rail system significantly better than any in the US. “Public provision” isn’t a magic means of access to well-provided services.
