Thing that’s weirdest for me about the US election is the contrast between the enormity of the consequences (threat to liberal democratic order in the US) with the banality of the explanation (incumbent party does badly in aftermath of high inflation).

One thing this underscores for me is just how much people dislike inflation, over and above the extent to which it impacts real income or material living standards- not because it doesn’t, but because other sources of equivalent levels of malaise seem to hurt incumbents less.
