Even better, once the trout fry emerge from the gravelly riverbed, these woody areas will provide spaces where they can hide from predators. This kind of complex habitat gives a huge boost to their chances of surviving into adulthood 🧵 3/3

Working with the Environment Agency and the Lower Itchen Fishery, we manually broke up the compacted gravels on the riverbed. We also added woody material to the channel, which will direct the flow in a way that will help to keep the riverbed clear 🧵 2/3

By removing 50-100% of each weir, we opened up these rivers for wildlife. The improved flow will also sweep away excess silt; just in time for trout and salmon spawning season. New woody material along the edges, and fencing to protect the riverbanks from livestock, will also help 🧵 3/4
