Eventually the tree eventually falls to the ground, but the story doesn't end there. More animals can find shelter in fallen trees. As they further decompose they nourish the very soil that supported their own life and will support the life of their descendants.

Snags provide excellent homes for bees and other insects. Perhaps the most commonly associated creature, the woodpecker, not only uses the snag and shapes the use of it by other animals in the future.
