It's best to split in the fall so the divided plants can establish their roots before spring. When it's as hot and dry as last summer, even natives need watering to look good.

You might want to report the armadillos to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Armadillos are not native to NC and populations have been moving north. Get a photo if you can.
