Even though it’s a protected species, hunting by some rural populations using dogs & box traps remains a threat today. The intro of the mongoose in 1872 to control the black rat population still threatens them.
 They are classified as #endangered by the  #iucn due to hunting and habitat loss.

They are social animals and can be found in small family groups.Females give birth up to two young per litter. The young can walk at birth & are able to eat solid food within 30 hours of birth. Coneys can climb and jump well & can run quickly over short distances

Its distribution is extremely fragmented. 16 population sites on the island, including the John Crow & Blue Mountains, the Hellshire Hills & the Brazilletto Mountains, CockpitCountry in They have specific habitat requirements, the further loss & degradation of habitat due to humans is a major threat

They forage at night on a herbivorous diet of fruit, shoots, bark & exposed roots,amongst other general foliage & will travel considerable distances at night in search of food.

Being a secretive, nocturnal animal, the They are rarely seen in the wild & very little is known about this species. Being largely nocturnal, the rabbit sized Jamaican #hutia which can weigh up to 2kg & has a very short tail.
