Just a little detour to help a rough-skinned newt get to safety. Every small act of kindness counts—especially for our wild neighbors.

Happiness is when your favorite neighbors stop by. Country living at its finest. So grateful for the good and bad in life that have led to moments like these. #horses #countryliving

On Saturdays during my some of my Park Ranger duties we listen to #DollyParton. It almost didn’t happen today, partly because of Dolly! #parkranger #cascades #smokies

When I made my New Year’s resolution to create frozen burritos for my work lunches, I had no idea how uncertain these times would be. Making food from scratch, saving money, and stocking up seem like better ideas than ever.

#homesteadhistory: The Myth of Vacant Land

Homesteading evokes images of pioneers settling untouched, but that was never true. The land been stewarded by Indigenous peoples. Knowing this history helps us make more informed choices for the future.

Daniel Freeman filed one of the first Homestead Act claims just after midnight on Jan 1, 1863. A farmer, doctor & sheriff, he built a life in Nebraska, raised 8 kids & fought for secular education. His land became Homestead National Historical Park. #HomesteadHeroes

The Williams family helped found Nicodemus, KS—the first and only remaining Black settlement west of the Mississippi. Built by formerly enslaved people in 1877, it became a beacon of hope despite harsh conditions. Their resilience shaped a lasting legacy of Black homesteaders. #Homesteader #history

The NY resolution is in progress: Canning pinto beans for easy, homemade frozen burritos! Whether you can your own or grab a can from the store, simple meals can be sustainable, budget-friendly, and delicious. Pressure canning is a great skill to learn, and beans are the perfect place to start!

Bald Eagles have ruled our wildlife posts, but this week’s star is a tiny bird more often heard than seen. If a wetland walk greeted you with chaotic trills and buzzes, you’ve likely met a Marsh Wren. These little acrobats flit through cattails, singing like glitching robots. #WildWednesday

When the weekend gets swallowed up by work—like digging out from a snowstorm—having homemade freezer meals is a lifesaver. This curry took minutes to reheat after a long day. If you’re balancing homesteading & a full-time job, a little meal prep makes tough days easier! #homesteading #mealprep

Struggling with cooking from a recipe? Trying writing it down on a piece of paper!

There’s a magic that happens when you walk through all the steps in this way.

Bonus tip: after you make the recipe, write notes on the back for next time
