Special Areas are designated parcels of land within the reserve that harbor exceptional ecological and cultural significance. There are currently five: Teshekpuk Lake, Colville River, Utukok River Uplands, Peard Bay and Kasegaluk Lagoon.

The outrageous lawsuit filed late last year by the state of Utah sought to “dispose” of 18.5 million acres of public lands in the Bureau of Land Management’s care. If heard by the Supreme Court, the case would have put millions of acres of public lands in western states at risk of sale.
