I missed "National Bison Day" yesterday. I love that American Icon and currently have a WIP with one. Here's an older piece featuring that amazing species.

Looks like this Black Bear is preparing well for winter. This practice of storing as many calories for hibernation is also called hyperphagia. Took this just north of Duluth, MN.

I knew I noticed a lot of Blue Jays the last few days along Superior's Shore near Duluth, MN, which is where Hawk Ridge is. Turns out they tallied over 8,000 Blue Jays on their amazing bird counts from 9/17/25 This is my first and only painting of this species "Blue and Gold", acrylic, 8x8

This is one of my best landscape photos from last year. As my favorite season begins it will be fun to see if I can top this one this year.
This is the October image for the 2025 John McFaul Northwoods Landscapes Calendar, taken in the Sylvania Wilderness Area, UP, MI.

Currently, the sparse population of Upper Peninsula bull moose travel far and wide in search of cows to mate with. Offering the best seasonal odds of seeing a moose in the UP or the Northwoods of WI. Here's my interpretation of that scenario "Diamond in the Rough - Moose", acrylic, 16x20, SOLD.

"Ten Mile Mallards", ships to Whitehouse, TN, today. Thanks, Andy!

After 15 years I suppose it's time to put a current photo up in the "About the Artist" section of my professional website. From my kayak where I get the most paddles in, the Gile Flowage, WI, USA.

Was hoping to see some of the coyotes that frequent a meadow where the deer graze in the evenings. No coyotes this time, but definitely appreciated this buck still in summer's velvet and orange coat.
Took this in Miner's Heritage Park, UP MI, USA.

When this porcupine discovered there was an imposing primate looking down on him/her from above the bike tire it was investigating.

There's a large old oak tree in the studio yard and the acorn mast is bountiful this year. Definitely being noticed by the resident wildlife.

Of course I cherish sunny days and landscapes when the fall colors are peaking, but also found a closer look on a rainy day interesting, hence one of my new reproductions "Four Leaves".

Water Lily closeup. This was from Tuesday's paddle on Black Lake in Wisconsin's Chequamegon National Forest. Last year it had the most extraordinary Water Lily bloom I had ever witnessed, this year it was considerably more subtle, but beautiful none the less.
Have a great Friday, ALL!

Didn't see much wildlife on last evening's paddle, was happy to encounter a coyote on the drive back though.

My second paddle in Upper Michigan's Sylvania Wilderness Area this year. My first trip this year I came upon the most picturesque active loon site of my life, so I had little hope I could come close to that on this second trip. Looming clouds and probable rain seemed ominous. Glad I went anyways!

Happy World Snake Day, ALL!

The largest snake I've ever seen in the Northwoods. Taken in Wisconsin's Turtle Flambeau Flowage, this is a Northern Water Snake. I'd just returned from Panama where I was always on the lookout for their numerous species of venomous snakes, didn't see any. Then this!

A Garter Snake whose sunning I interrupted when I launched my kayak yesterday. Gile Flowage, WI, USA.

From last evening's kayak paddle on the Montreal River, WI, USA. Of course it was placid as it could be back here. Earlier when I was attempting to video a fledgling Bald Eagle's first flights I was battling rough waters from high winds. Was nice to recharge with the Wood Thrushes song though.
