The leaked OBR document says pay per mile will apply to plug in hybrids as well as BEVs

So raises more money, and distinctive to PHEVs that will pay fuel duty _and_ mileage

But still not big money

Here's somebody's figures FWIW, seen similar numbers from other studies.

If it was collected in one place, that's two buckets full of water!

The world's largest chemicals manufacturing complex is in Mannheim.

They use more than a GW of energy, of which most ends as waste heat, rejected into the Rhine.

There's plenty of heat in the Rhine to spare!

Democracies can build big infra quickly too, including on wetlands.

The previous website allows you to choose units for windspeed - some people need it in knots or Beaufort.

But the new website only has mph ☹️

The papers are sadly not silent about it:
"Shock rise"
"Bills go up"
"Ofgem raises prices"
"Cost of living crisis"

Why didn't they just leave it unchanged till next time? could have saved a lot of newsprint and aggro for £3.

ISTR monitoring requirement for RHI when I had a heatpump on a previous house. I think it was waived because there was no mobile signal where we were, after a lot of admin.

The costs for metering were quite substantial back then, when £800 was still worth lots!

"Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey has written to wet wipes producers setting out her concerns". 29 May 2023

Had forgotten about that effort!

'Flushable' wipes are very much still available, sold with prominent eco friendly markers like '0% plastic' and 'FSC'.

The best wind resources in China seem to be up North, quite far (1000miles) from the coastal cities in the South and East. So transmission will also be a challenge.

Like UK, but more so.

Every transmission project does have a clear justification, published and consulted by NESO. The transmission companies roll them into their RIIO business plan that is governed and determined by OFGEM, also consulted at great length.

Is the problem that people aren't made aware of this?

Sadi Carnot wrote in 1824 about how heatpumps work.

He didn't think he'd invented them or that the idea was new, so the theory must have been around for some time before then.

Some people are still charging for those.

Some people are still paying!

Gov publishes "DUKES" energy data, nice pic here, link in alt text

We produce 340, import 450, export 120, so overall net import 330. (in TWh)

You could say we 'buy some extra imports', and then sell some of them on to Ireland and Belgium who don't have so many import facilities.

The UK is very much a net importer of oil and gas, have been since the early 2000s I think. Costs us £70bn/y so that's about £1000 per person.

We import gas by pipeline from Norway, and by tanker ship from the US, Qatar and a bunch of smaller countries in Africa and S America.

The report says that the UK Government has a list of UK consumers that it has categorised as "critical" infrastructure, in 13 categories

However that list is National Security sensitive and not publicly available. So they can't share the list with the operation teams in the distribution networks..
November 7, 2025 at 3:38 PM
Yes absolutely, I follow your posts and was very surprised to see reposted the "£500" claims made by those people.

Their policy is to oppose current Labour energy transition, and issue more oil drilling licences instead. 🙄

There was a revealing investigation into a power failure that closed Heathrow airport (UK's largest).

One finding was that UK grid operators aren't aware which customers are Critical Infrastructure (CNI) and cannot legally prioritise them over other customers.

😃

Not aware of (m)any heat consumers who could utilise 18% of their heat purchase at a low enough temperature to condense decent amount of the dilute water vapour in combustion gas. That's < 20degC

Even nat gas "condensing" boilers only condense v small amounts, 50deg is too hot.

There actually a third device too, a hybrid-ing unit that does interfacing between the outdoor heatpump and the indoor gas boiler.

In their trials they put the hybrid unit outdoors with the HP, but it can go indoors instead.

This is great, but I was surprised to learn the 'coastline' in maps is the extent of ice, not land.

In many places the ice is resting on rock that is below sea level, depressed by the weight of the ice.

Would love to know the area based on the land (below the ice) that is above sea level?
