(In the UK): From 1968 to 1988, the richest in society got more rich quicker than the poorest of society. From 1988 to 2024, the poorest got richer faster than the richest. ourworldindata.org/grapher/thre...

Some people are using the flag as a symbol for being anti-refugee and anti-migrant, but there's nothing inherently hateful or callous about the flag. The flag is nothing more or less than the choices that we make as a nation, so let's make choices that we can be proud of.

Modern life could and should be better. We've put too many roadblocks in the path of our own success. However, modern life is also better than what we had before. Pre-industrial society was a nightmare of death, misery, and poverty.

Calculating national/global scale consumption/emissions and then comparing it to something human scale seems really common in environmental messaging, but it distorts our perceptions of what is and us not high impact andymasley.substack.com/p/my-can-of-...

That's not to say that we should all give up YouTube though, just that I worry that we're repeating the plastic straw problem: we're focusing on the things that would be easiest to give up rather than the things that will actually make a difference andymasley.substack.com/p/a-cheat-sh...

I've seen multiple content creators on YouTube complain about the environmental cost of ChatGPT and I suspect they are unaware that the are throwing stones in glass houses? Streaming is much more energy intensive than ChatGPT? andymasley.substack.com/p/a-cheat-sh...

That whole section is odd: reads more like a memo to employees to convince them that the funds spent on rebranding was a good idea rather than information put together for prospective students?

Not sure if this is true anymore?

An income of less than £35k is the criteria for receiving winter fuel allowance.

This is per person btw, not per household. Two pensioners with a combined income of less than £70k would also get winter fuel allowance.

Anglophone nations tend to build low-density cities with less housing spread across the same amount of land. Other nations that build a more natural density pattern across their cities end up building up homes and having lower housing costs. www.ft.com/content/dca3...

This thread was in response to a criticism of Will Stancil by someone who did in fact think that the typical American is experiencing poverty, which would mean that the majority of Americans are experiencing poverty, which is very false.
May 17, 2025 at 4:43 PM
None of this seems to have anything to do with what I was posting about. I've never said anything about Biden or what Democratic policy should be. I've just observed the very clear fact that the large majority of Americans are not experiencing poverty.
May 17, 2025 at 4:39 PM
All I'm seeing here is you attacking claims that no one made in order to acknowledge statistical facts (e.g. the typical American is not experiencing poverty).
May 17, 2025 at 4:38 PM
No.

Even rich households may find rising cost of living to be a challenge. Rising cost of living is a pet cause of mine and I often post about what I think could be done to reduce cost of living.

But the idea that the typical American is poor is silly. Most Americans enjoy a high quality of life
May 17, 2025 at 4:35 PM
You seem to be asserting that I think that nothing should be changed, or that cost of living is not higher than it should be, or that American healthcare couldn't be improved. I don't hold any of those stances.

I am saying that the large majority of Americans aren't experiencing poverty.
May 17, 2025 at 4:33 PM
The topic was whether the typical American was experiencing poverty, and the very clear evidence that the majority of Americans are not experiencing poverty.

There was no claim that poverty had been eradicated, or that more shouldn't be done to reduce poverty. You've made someone up to be angry at.
May 17, 2025 at 4:32 PM
What do you think the poverty rate should be?

Our World in Data will allow you to select a number of different rates for international comparison. None of them include a majority of Americans.

Some people are saying that a median isn't a good measure because it doesn't tell us what is happening at lower percentiles, but I don't think that's true of the specific claim? It's always going to be the case that half of society will have a median income or higher?
May 17, 2025 at 3:37 PM
If you feel inclined to criticise and disagree with someone online, it's always best to try to do so without mockery, insult, or hostility. The more angry you are in your attack, the more embarrassing it will be if you make an error, and the harder it will be to admit that error.
May 17, 2025 at 3:03 PM
It is definitely true that even low-income households in America enjoy a relatively affluent quality of life compared to both other nations around the world and to previous eras of American history.
May 17, 2025 at 2:48 PM
Ayo should have learnt his lesson when he tried to correct someone on the definition of median without googling it. While 'relative poverty' is a real concept, the majority of Americans are not in relative or absolute poverty. In fact, the typical American can't be in relative poverty by definition.
May 17, 2025 at 2:45 PM
Pretty sure I just did: relative economic hardship may exist in America, but absolute poverty is rare in both North America and West Europe. The 'typical American' is not poor ourworldindata.org/poverty
May 17, 2025 at 1:49 PM
It's not that I don't understand that you dislike Stancil (or me). In fact, that's exactly why I think you're saying strange and false things. You seem a lot less worried about whether what you're saying is true and more concerned with any opportunity for expressing insult and anger.
May 17, 2025 at 1:47 PM
I think it's true that your hostility towards Will Stancil is why your wildly lashing out at anything he says, and possibly why you didn't bother to check what a median is before accusing Stancil of not knowing. You're not taking the time to think through what you're actually saying.
May 17, 2025 at 1:46 PM
North America and Europe have some of the lowest poverty rates in the world. It's nonsense to say that the typical American is living in poverty.
