I only discovered today that there was a tradition of carving "root ghosts" at Halloween in some parts of Germany. I had never heard of it before. The root vegetable of choice for this was the sugar beet.

Hier in Schottland wurden traditionell auch Rüben, genauer gesagt Steckrüben, an Halloween zu Laternen verwandelt - ebenso in Irland. www.nts.org.uk/stories/6-sc...
