All we wanted was a chance to talk
'stead we only got outlined in chalk
feet have bled, a million miles we've walked
revealing, at the end of the day, the charade

no offends if this is you but if you're thinking "this is going to make the right do fascism" they're already there. they blew up a boat with 11 people on it for being immigrants. they're kidnapping US citizens and trying to rendition them to Uganda. do you think we're on a trajectory to peace

hello cis friends
this is what people mean by trans genocide

if a type of person does not officially exist, then any harm against them cannot be measured or reported

this headline change isn't even being caused by an executive order

it's simply the NYT editors deciding we don't deserve to exist

Sometimes the most interesting music comes from one's artistic integrity, and sometimes the key to a true curio is the complete lack of it. I do so miss when old bands were basically forced to keep up to survive. Def Leppard does screeching industrial downtempo. Insane.

no misses, but the title track's a tough sell as a Kdot-light posse cut of local talents with an impenetrable beat, and man I wish dodger blue was longer

Ok there we go, pretty good. Future Nostalgia, Silk Sonic, Olivia's powerful debut, one of Doja's best hits. On the other hand, no matter how bad you remember that Kid Laroi solo hit being, it's worse, and little is corner this decade than Masked Wolf.

Ok perhaps I spoke too soon good Lord. 2022 isn't bombarded with As much recycled material but it's lousy with some of the most forgettable shit of the decade. Bad TikTok hits, Future's lamest track, that uselessly masturbatory Elton "remix", who let Kodak come back with such nothing? Vaporous.

A low-key rap highlight for the year for me, an exquisite dusky sample flip with a cool stride, and Mickey's booming vox are dominant but smooth as butter, it all pops with widescreen cinematic flair. Somewhat iffy mix job aside, very easy to vibe to. You gotta love it!

The great American rock band loses their drummer, and where most would frantically race to prove their vitality when cut down, R.E.M. open their first album as a trio by basking in the cradling tranquility of Eno-style ambient, executed as if they'd always been doing it!

One of the great anti-capitalist audio works by the kings of culture jamming, an equally hilarious and harrowing satirical document of the influence of advertising, the centering of corporations as a necessary service, slowly turning our green world into a great big burning hunk of plastic. Pepsi!

What Chic had over their contemporaries was a lush sense of regality, always cool, yet poised and glittery. Here they render that shimmer into forlorn devastation, shuddering as if near collapse. One of disco's greatest string arrangements, I could listen to this forever.

Cheem call themselves "nu pop", and that's proudly nu, not new. A 00s smoothie of emo swoon, breezy dance beats, pop punk angst, boyband sass, crunch and slam in the low end to tip cap to nu metal, it's all there, but key is they blend it so well, a bite-sized power surge!

Of all the worshipped classic rock outfits, Queen may stand as the very most overrated, musicianship rarely as fun as Mercury should be allowed to be, glam camp impeded by immense lameness. But they also kinda accidentally invented speed metal so??? Balance in all things.

one more for today. I swear probably the worst year for pop in my lifetime, it's a wonder 2024 isn't also polluted with covers and old shit. I will never listen to that useless ass karaoke cover of Fast Car again and it's halfway up. Grim year!

Beverly Hills by Weezer is a terribly dumb song. This song is pretty much Beverly Hills II. So why do I like it? Rivers Cuomo's trademark loserdom can't kill that he's a genuine rockstar, these guys sound like they're gonna die nobodies. We root for nobodies 'round here.

Long time purveyors of the room-filling majesty of arena rock via electro, here they risk it all by simplifying. It's still got glitz and pomp, but for once the energy radiates pop. Punchy repetition over proggy sprawl, and this has its risks, but this one slides.

Clinic love old, flawed keyboards but these sound like the components were melted in the sun. A caffeinated synth punk tantrum, a klaxon having a heart attack, one of the coolest cuts off one of the best indie debuts of the 00s, one that doesn't get enough love nowadays!

In what is largely a fanservice comeback, LP 2.0 prove they still have some ceilings they can smash. The high frequency lead squeals, Mike's vocal fry, the thrash freakout of the chorus, it's a no frills hardcore stomper on a record often afraid to just swing

Nick Drake's career was brief but breathtaking, maybe the most beautiful voice of all time. In context this feels like a sort of upfront goodbye, but maybe its more of a “til we meet again”, like being hugged by the solar system, a small reverberation that refuses to stop.

An unusually balmy, melancholic slice of gaze from the typically jangly New Zealanders but one of my favorites. Exudes such a comfort, so delicate yet deeply layered, guitars weaving and intersecting like power lines, swirling around the skies of a sleeping city at dusk.
