CW for some mild body horror
The Hound pulled against the chain wrapped tight around her throat. Metal spikes tore the delicate skin open, greedily drinking the crimson rivulets from the wounds. Blood fed the chain, fed the Hunter; starved the Hound. Torn flesh clung to her skull. Hung down like a curtain parted to reveal the canine face lurking under the old one; the once human one. The one whose name she no longer remembered.

Deirdre stepped into the trees. When he looked at them straight on, everything looked as it should. Solid. But at the edges of his vision, shadows curled like smoke from deeply scored bark. Leaves danced along the branches to music she could not hear. Spider webs stretched between trees. The strings vibrated, a harp plucked by unseen hands. Bugs—at least, she hoped they were bugs—thrashed futilely in the sticky netting.

Sickly green stars glowed above her. She had stuck them up there almost fifteen years ago and they persisted, still giving off a weak glow. They used to make her feel better. Bring the sky down to her and keep her pressed down to earth. Now, she longed for the opposite. To feel expansive. Vast. A night sky stitched with stars in her flesh as she blanketed the planet.
