Oh, and although it's compulsory, I've never heard of anyone actually getting fined. You just give an excuse. The main aim is that it sets an expectation. And the system supports postal votes and early voting, so it can fit in with your life. We still elect an idiot on occasion. :)

We Australians have a great system. Compulsory and preferential. As a result everyone votes and if you want to protest, you put in a "donkey vote". Also we have an independent centralised agency that manages it. Very professional. Preferential means minor parties and independents are viable.

Latakia is where the First Crusaders got wood to build siege weapons when taking on Atakya (Antioch). The loss of life in Syria is a tragedy. A smaller loss, but one that I mourn is the loss of history. My thoughts go out to the Syrians
