A British Labour politician, Colquhoun became the first openly lesbian Member of Parliament after coming out in 1975. Though she faced hostility and lost her seat, her visibility paved the way for future queer politicians in the U.K. Her courage set an early precedent for LGBTQ+ representation

Karl Heinrich Ulrichs (1825–1895)
A German lawyer, writer, and activist, Ulrichs is often called the first openly gay man. In the 1860s, he began publicly advocating for the rights of men who loved men, coining terms that predated “homosexual.”
