A British Labour politician, Colquhoun became the first openly lesbian Member of Parliament after coming out in 1975. Though she faced hostility and lost her seat, her visibility paved the way for future queer politicians in the U.K. Her courage set an early precedent for LGBTQ+ representation

Karl Heinrich Ulrichs (1825–1895)
A German lawyer, writer, and activist, Ulrichs is often called the first openly gay man. In the 1860s, he began publicly advocating for the rights of men who loved men, coining terms that predated “homosexual.”

Through essays and poetry, she remains one of the most influential queer voices of the 20th century.

A Black lesbian poet, writer, and activist, Lorde described herself as “Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet.” Her work confronted racism, sexism, and homophobia, becoming central to Black feminist thought.

The country’s first Pride march took place under apartheid, where homosexuality was still criminalized. Led by activists including Simon Nkoli, it united struggles against racial and sexual oppression, setting the stage for later constitutional protections.

Often cited as one of history’s earliest recognizable transgender figures, d’Éon remains an enduring symbol of gender nonconformity.

A French diplomat, soldier, and spy, d’Éon lived part of their life presenting as a man and later as a woman, gaining fame across Europe. Their gender fluidity fascinated and scandalized 18th-century society.

She co-founded the National Organization for Women and influenced landmark civil rights arguments. Though she lived before terms like “nonbinary” were widespread, her writings reveal struggles with gender identity alongside her groundbreaking activism.

SFPD retaliated with raids on gay bars in the Castro District of San Francisco. These events had and still have a long standing impact on politics in San Francisco, across the state and nation.

After Harvey Milk’s assassin, Dan White, received a lenient sentence, thousands took to the streets in outrage. Protesters clashed with police outside City Hall, resulting in numerous injuries and hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage.
