Black Friday beer stuff is still definitely a thing in Milwaukee, largely due to @lakefront, which today dropped its Black Friday deets: The always-boss "regular" Black Friday stout aged in @GLDistillery whiskey barrels, a coffee-cacao variant, its OG triple black IPA and a black wheatwine.

I think we're overdue for a new edition of ASK THE BEER BARON! What's your burning question around beer or brewing? Ask and you could become newspaper-famous!

If you’re in Tosa East Towne trick-or-treating with your kids be sure to come by the Sanderson Witch Museum (2400 block of 70th St) for a beery treat.

These editors just cannot help but step on their own dicks when they talk about literally anything in the Midwest, can they?

Lots of tried-and-true New Glarus beers returning for fall and one new one in the Thumbprint series: Framboise! (No word on how that is different from Raspberry Tart.)

Folks, this week TWO Milwaukee breweries reopened.
MobCraft beer has been up and running since Monday (though they aren't brewing yet) and today Lombardi Beer is opening in the former City Lights brewery in the Menomonee Valley. #letsgo

Folks, @mobcraftbeer has reopened. New owners Sarah and Ryan Halstead had a soft opening over the weekend and will be firing up the brewery's social media later today for the first time since the brewery closed in November. (Pic from closing weekend.)

The Great Dane is closing its Hilldale location, last day of service Nov. 8. It's the second closure this year for Madison's original brewpub; Wausau location closed in April.

Biersal, the Vliet Street tavern wonderfully updated from the former Wonder Bar by Eric Gutbrod, has closed. No reason is given in the post. The bar had posted earlier that it was closed due to foundation problems, but those posts are now gone.

Say hi, we love that shit
August 7, 2025 at 2:57 AM
It would make so much more sense for all of these brewers to simply not come to Madison, but they are. Because they love this festival, they love the crowd and they love Madison. See y'all Saturday. FIN

Those brewers are worth listing and shouting out because a lot of these are *really* small breweries who, let's face it, could probably use an extra $1,000+ on the balance sheet right now. I'm going to these tents to thank them and drink some of their beer.

This is tough news for one of the things that makes the Great Taste so great – beer you're not going to find anywhere else in Wisconsin. BUT, by my estimation there are *25* brewers that are biting the bullet and paying the (two-year) state permit to come to this festival. That's remarkable IMO.

The number of Wisconsin brewers is up this year, from 81 to 97. Out-of-state brewers are down across the board, more dramatically in some states than others. Apologies to Kentucky, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska for not breaking y'all out here.
August 7, 2025 at 2:37 AM
Overall, the change is visible, at least in the program. I count 169 breweries for 2025, down from (my count of) 195 from last year. It's a difference you can see most starkly in the state-by-state page of the program.
