In recent months, US government authorities and affiliated organizations have contacted universities and research institutions across the globe in a bid to obtain information on the political leanings of institutions and on research projects receiving US funding. In this context, various authorities from the US administration have sent extensive questionnaires directly to researchers. The questionnaires focused on topics including collaborations with communist, socialist or totalitarian organizations, research projects’ approach to diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI), climate research, and the potential benefit of the research for the US economy. As far as we know at present, no specific cases have come to light in Germany. The German Rectors' Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz, HRK) has classified the development as “worrying” and has stated that they are in contact with European partners in this respect.
