My mother and I had been puppeteers since I was a child. We would typically traverse the emtrance, casting shadows for the prisoners in their cave to watch. They couldn't see us. When she built the swing, she said it was to give their show depth. To get closer, and farther, away.

She tells me its Raynaud Syndrome, why she hides her feet under me on the couch, why the heart shies away from the edge, how her hands are the first to admit she's been stretched too thin. Still, the cold feels like home, like low tide waiting for the moon to warm her up.
