Taping corset boning together to be wire wrapped later but actually kinda liking the blue tape…
Katie’s left hand pinches a form made of - from left clockwise- an irregular trapezoid, pentagon, and hexagon taped together. The hexagon form is the largest and has a very small top face which the pentagon sits on. What would normally be the top of the trapezoid connects to the side of the pentagon, with the trapezoid’s longest face - which is usually the bottom- towards the left of the frame. Blue painter’s tape connects cut pieces of corset boning that measures about 1/4 inch wide. The boning is bent at each corner of the shapes, and Katie’s pointer, middle finger, and thumb pinch where the far left points of the trapezoid and hexagon meet.

Art imitates life esp when it’s a casting
A hand holds a paper cast of a plastic take away coffee lid. This lid was one collected during Katie’s 2022 scholarship at Penland School of Craft. The paper cast has a coffee stain from what was left on the lid - now a fossil of almost 2 year-old coffee. A paper cast in the shape of a tater tot if flattened out is being held up in front of the camera. The cast is a light gray and has a neon green, though photographed yellow, weaving of embroidery floss towards the upper middle of it’s body. While the focus of this photo is the cast, there is a blur of color from Katie’s studio in the background. They really should start cleaning up more often. In the fields of Penland, a Queen Anne’s Lace flower (or what Katie believes to be one until corrected) is pictured closed up in front of a flower of the same name whose face is to the sky. The stalk is quite spiked looking and its smaller flower stems coming from its crown are closed tightly in the shape of an almond standing up. The field is an array of green, with fog peering through. Another plant Katie didn’t look up is nearby and photo bombing the scene. Its stem is quite fern like, but it has tiny buds of red - like pomegranate seeds- that are sprinkled along the stem like sesame seeds on a bagel. Katie is pictured at their table in the fabric workshop at Penland. They are holding an indigo dyed folded up pair of overalls they made during their visit and have their mouth open in mid-presentation. The table holds a display of various indigo creations, notably a stack of the coffee cups and lids they collected over the course of their two week stay. Windows in the foreground are lined with more indigo dyed projects they began. Katie is wearing their summer uniform, mustard shorts and a deep red tank top with a forrest green, navy blue, and white flannel tied at their waste.

A sketchbook page has two ideas hurriedly illustrated, one idea drawn below the other. The one towards the top of the page shows a rectangle with wavy edges standing vertically with holes cut into it like Swiss cheese. Behind the sheet is a drawing of a person looking up at their hand. The hand has the pointer finger arched out reminiscent of Jesus’ finger from Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. It is pointing to the right of frame. Only the fingers are drawn, as if it is the persons right hand with the palm facing towards them. The head is below the hand looking up. Only the nose, eye, and forehead are in frame. The depiction reminiscent of a hill in a landscape portrait. Its nose stands upright towards the middle of the foreground, and it’s eye with a large exaggerated tear drop are closer to the right edge of the frame. There is an arrow pointing to the hand and head drawing that has script next to it that says “cut outs?” The sketch below that one is organized in three parts. Two sketched images next to each other and text underneath. The image on the left is of a crude square cube that has a quick drawn theater light above its left top corner. Unlike the swiss cheese holes in the top drawing, there is only one hole at the facing side of the cube. In the hole there is a small drawing of the arched finger from before. The image to the right has a speech bubble, telling the viewer that this is the view from that small hole in the cube. The view is a larger view of the arched finger in the hole of the cube. The text below both images reads “All white - light is the color?” On top of the sketchbook page from the previous image is a physical white cardstock paper that has its edges cut and bent. It looks as if it is an unfolded cereal box. There is a middle fold that splits the page into two sections, a left and right. On the left is a hole the size of a quarter cut through in the top left quadrant of that side. On the right side is a taped on cut out of a hand with its pointer finger out and bent at the knuckle. Again like Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. However the hand is drawn separated from an arm, and the wrist feels like a stump. Only the fingers are shown, and they all have two strokes of hair on their knuckles and feature simplified fingernails. Light is coming from behind the camera and shadows streak across the cardstock making the folded paper very visible. Katie’s left hand is to the side and under the hardboard making the same gesture the hand cut out is making. Katie’s left hand holds up a white rectangular box of cardstock. In the right top quadrant of the facing side is a hole that has the pointed finger in frame. The inside of the box in brighter than the outside, because the top of the box has been cut off revealing light from the window directly to the left out of frame. There is a blur of colors and shapes making out the studio area in the background. A close up of the circular cut out shows the face of the rectangle box in shadow with some light hitting the rough edges of the cuts and leaves the right side of the image plane in shadow. The central cut out however is vibrantly in contrast, with a bright image of the finger drawing laying against the white background of the box.

I didn’t have a cooling rack but I baked some ciabatta and made a little skewer sculpture for them to chill out on. Now I gotta go eat some with butter and honey byeeee
