Your assumed knowledge — if you got left behind in the 1990s, here's what you missed.

I did like that question mark icon — it was kind of friendly and confident. Windows arrow, you're drunk.

Alt+Escape continues to be weird one — not Ctrl+Escape — that basically switches apps immediately to this day; but before the Start Bar and Dock, this was just a way to rearrange the egg-form of your running applications.

Today's Alt+Escape is a little bit like […]

Behold, the origin of Alt-Tab

It's really grown a lot in 40 years

Alt+Spacebar was a bit evil, hey?

Windows 2.x: How to Close a Window

There will be a test.

Mac users should be able to figure this one out.

Of course, we got Ctrl-S to copy Cmd-S "Save"

But we're still waiting for Ctrl-Q, I think?
You had to learn Alt-F4, for some reason.

And then there's these … omg ßæπ÷ç∫√

Windows 2.x still thought it "knew better" than Mac when it came to keyboard shortcuts …

Undo: Alt+Backspace
Cut: Shift+Delete
Copy: Ctrl+Insert
Paste: Shift+Insert

1990 would change that. Of course, the option-key shortcuts that Mac started in 1984 … ? Still […]

[Eldritch abominations of non-standard measuring units]

Best nerdy video you’ll see in 2025. You’ll laugh or cringe so hard your wisdom teeth will pop out.

Fair play to the Lyric Theatre in Sydney — they published my critical review. #bttf #backtothefuture The Musical is rightfully getting mixed reviews on Reddit, but most theatre reviews are uniformly from people who are identifiably fans of ALL musicals, and only […]

Back in 2018-19, the movie #burning was a critical hit — for some reason. It was a #korean psychological thriller #movie that reached breakthrough status in the west, and that implies it was better than most Korean movies, most non-Hollywood movies, or most […]

Quiz time! What does this chart represent? It’s a timeline from 1977 to 2025. Two clues:

1. It continues to the present day
2. I just watched Wayne’s World 2

A part of the alt text:

@siracusa I thought you might like to give a shout out to http://betterdisplay.pro

Not sure if you've ever mentioned it on @atpfm ? It's the most incredibly full-featured UI on a Mac app I've seen in years. (That's with or without "Show Details").

And that's […]

What can I use to make this? Hopefully easily (as in, the lines all move in a group if I need to reposition), but honestly I don't care if not — I just want it to know about curves and gaps, positioning nicely by default.

@arroz @europlus Ah, good view in Barcelona? I was there recently. The pool looked nice but they didn’t have anyone using it, with covers on in October. Which seemed a shame.

@dangillmor @bespacific That CO2 chart ain’t bending down … what’s the goal? 1,000ppm? 2,000ppm? Academic test scores go down at 1,000ppm. If you want to lower the human race’s total IQ, keeping burning coal and oil and gas […]
