So yes, I'm being a hater. But this was all an extremely long story to illustrate that I am not doing it simply for the love of being contrarian.

Come on man how many more times are we going to clap like seals for a studio trying to resell our past to us? It's gonna suck. It ALWAYS sucks. 12/ end

2008 was probably the last time the conditions existed to make a good Mummy sequel and it sucked. I don't see a universe where movies are [GESTURES WILDLY AT THE CURRENT STATE OF MOVIES, ESPECIALLY LEGACY SEQUELS] like this that a Mummy reunion would be anything more than a shitty cash grab. 11/

Franchises, with few exceptions, don't end. They die. And they, again with exceptions, die for a reason.

The Mummy 1999 was a foundational movie for me and another unimpeachable classic.

But the sequels sucked out loud, largely in part that no one involved really seemed to want to make them. 10/

So here's the point...
Do you want to know what ended my journey? The movie that made Indiana Jones feel like...well..The Dark Knight?

The Mummy: Tomb of Dragon Emperor.

Yes. This whole thread was so that I could remind you that you are wrong to care or be excited about a Mummy legacy sequel. 9/

So yeah Don't Mess with the Zohan or The Love Guru also came out that year but I KNEW those would suck so I largely avoided them and their ilk. I wanted to go in expecting good or fine and getting well...Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. And I kept having my expectations met or exceeded. 8/

Just a quick qualifier there for anyone who might be tempted to look at what else came out that summer and I guess it would be more appropriate to say I was looking for a movie more disappointing that Indiana Jones so obviously stuff with a bad rep didn't really count. 7/

It's probably nostalgia for when I was of the age you get nostalgic about but looking back it was truly one of the last great summer blockbuster runs we ever had. Which was becoming a bit of a joke within my friend group because, remember, I was looking for a movie WORSE than Indian Jones. 6/

c) an uncommon amount of what are now considered great if not unimpeachable classics: The Dark Knight, WALL-E, Step Brothers, Hellboy II. Not to mention I had already seen Iron Man and Speed Racer and would go on to see Pineapple Express, Burn After Reading and Tropic Thunder. 5/

What followed was a string of movies that were
a) Mid but still better that Skulls (Get Smart, Wanted Hancock)
b) Better than I thought they would be (The Incredible Hulk, Journey to the Center of the Earth, X-Files) or... 4/

So I made the decision that Indie would NOT be the worst movie I saw that year and I would go to the movies and see whatever the big late night screening was every week until I saw a movie that was worse than Crystal Skull. Blockbusters are fun but often bad, so I assumed it wouldn't take long. 3/

I worked swings at a hotel front desk at the time so there wasn't much left to do after work most of time, except this was the era of the TRUE early midnight screening. I could get off work at 11pm and meet my friends at the movies and see whatever the new hype thing was that week. Great times. 2/
