NWO project on the nature and role of lived experience and experiential knowledge in mental health care
Beautiful and substantive report on our conference last June (part one). Take a look for a to-the-point summary of the great arguments and ideas that were presented. Thank you @lisabortolotti.com!

Who knows what in mental health? The conference (part one)
Radboud University hosted a conference on 11th and 12th June 2025 examining the interplay between the study of epistemic injustice and the debates on expertise by experience in mental healthcare. This is a brief report of some of the talks presented on the first day of the conference.

We were so happy to have the inspiring @lisabortolotti.com give a keynote at our conference today!
Great to see how a combination of expertise-through-experience, philosophy and empirical study has resulted in concrete and substantial recommendations for avoiding epistemic injustice.

It was a great experience to present at the Radboud University conference on expertise in mental health, linking #epistemicinjustice to barriers to expertise performance, & receive feedback from philosophers, clinicians, and lived experience researchers. #philsky #philpsy

Very interesting talks by Mahony and Chevalier, & by Stephen Gadsby, on lived experience and participatory research in the context of anorexia nervosa: to what extent does the pursuit of thinness or the anorexia diagnosis become part of the person's identity? #epistemicinjustice #philpsy #philsky

What a way to end the conference on expertise in mental health! Ian James Kidd discusses the hermeneutical frustrations in depression which can be understood phenomenologically and cautions against the use of the #epistemicinjustice framework in this context #philsky #philpsy

We have heard some amazing talks at our first conference day!
First, the great dr. Serife Tekin @thebusyowl.bsky.social on the neglect of the self in psychiatry, and her Multitudinous Self Model.
Next, Roy Dings and Derek Strijbos on how lived experience changes our responsiveness profile.

Last talk of day 1 of our conference 'Who knows what in mental health care?', by Julian Kiverstein.
"Giving authority to the medicalized language of the DSM is exclusory to the vocabulary of lived experience"
"Phenomenology can be a tool for communicating experiences that are hard to describe"

Last week, we had our first reading group meeting about Borkman's famous 1976 article on experiential knowledge.
It led us to the question: is there such a thing as '(in)correct' experiential knowledge? What would it mean for experiential knowledge, or even experience, to be 'incorrect'?

New publication!
Roy Dings and Derek Strijbos propose a conceptual framework to address questions about the epistemic contribution of people with lived experience in (mental) healthcare.
Expertise-by-experience, they argue, is about attuned responsiveness.

Our NWO project on experiential knowledge in mental health care is now online!
What does it mean to be an 'expert-by-experience'? How is experiential knowledge different from other knowledges? And how can we improve mental healthcare by answering these questions? Follow us and find out!
