We rarely need new things — we just need new ideas. Here’s a thrifted lunch container I repurposed into art supply storage for the 4 kids in our shared home of 9. The tin adds character to our <800 sqft residence & keeps it tidier & better organized. #smallspaceliving #repurposing #storagesolutions

Let’s not be fooled into thinking we need mass produced organizers from big retailers to maximize our smaller spaces. We can create something clever by reusing what we have & choosing Used. As you can see in our kitchen, even a 2.5” strip of wall between windows can be put to use. #smallspaceliving

Even tho 2/3 of the US is concerned re: climate change, fewer than 1/3 of consumers are “making purchasing decisions based on the steps companies have taken to reduce pollution.”* This is why I suggest repurposing & sourcing used for a more mindful approach to interiors.

A before and after of the tiny, shared, thoroughfare yard of our <400 sqft cottage. There’s so much we can do to grow something green and good in abundance in small + tricky spaces.

I don’t feel helpless. I feel frustrated, heartbroken and furious, but not helpless.

Here’s a photo of my favorite public library worker (who also happens to be my partner) volunteering at a local non-profit and reuse store by restocking their free shelf on his day off.

The helpers are everywhere.

I wrote my latest article about how we design smaller spaces to remain flexible for the long run in anticipation of unexpected changes. (The piece opens w/ a story about our new rescue dog eating everything he can fit in his giant jaws. It’s all related.)

8 years old, volunteering at a non-profit farm that’s combating food insecurity by donating produce and educating the community in horticulture. This is where our focus is in 2025.

Making a total mess of the tiny (114 sqft) greenhouse-office, with seeds, propagated plants and potted varieties given to us by friends and neighbors. We’re working on growing more at home and volunteering at local community gardens, because the change has to come from the ground up, in every sense.
