Yeah, I've come to see that looking at politics abroad, America just had a post war era where the two were intrinsically tied, also, politicians like Reagan sought to cripple public education right before Millennials were entering school, so the nuance of the differences escapes a lot of people.

Basically, there's that link of social liberalism and economic liberalism, which are favored by opposing sides of the political spectrum here in the States. Though there is a thing to be said about the lefts (older) leadership being more classic neoliberals which are center at best.

American definition of Liberal is strange, and depends on who you ask, to the regular person, liberal = leftist. To those more educated and savvy in politics, there's the whole thing with later 20th century neoliberalism, which with it's views on economic policy is favored by the right....

Looking at him reminds me of Superman Villain "Lex Luthor". He's literally a comic book supervillain.

"Why can't we just be feudal lords and you the peasants living on our land?"

I've been reading your stuff since the early days of Hob, and even way back then, though your work didn't have those overt themes (that I recall) you could tell you're a progressive intellectual who would be cool with such things, I don't see how he could be that surprised.

It's fuckin' scary out there, wish I could help people in the cities where these things are happening (but I'm isolated out in rural America, which is it's own kind of scary being surrounded by MAGA signs on lawns and thin blue line bumper stickers, not a safe place to publicly show support.)

Many of us ARE worried. However, just like in 1930s Germany, many are also being swayed by the charismatic promises and propaganda of a would be dictator. It's scary, and infuriating.

Sadly the rebels, hippies, etc. don't often survive to old age as often as the bootlickers and conformists.
January 6, 2026 at 12:55 AM
As much as us Gen Xers like to think we're a monolith of the 'cool counterculture rebel', we're not, there were plenty of douchebags currying up to the establishment back when we were young, just like there were plenty of straight laced pro authority people during the era of the Hippie....

Me too, I should be working on commissions, but can barely manage housework.

Sadly the powers that be have spent a lot of time and money on propaganda, and too much of our population has bought in to raise a credible resistance to the Empire, and the half that bought it will never not believe the lies.

because cosmetics lead to more profits. If you get discounted packs or draft tokens, you might spend less on cards in the long run, not so with cosmetics, and they're not spending much on these cosmetics, most of the art assets already exist..

I get this, I'm still using an iPhone 8Plus, runs smooth, battery doesn't last with heavy use, but that's manageable.

Oh, hey, I used to read that webcomic back in my college days in the early 2000s. There is a not-insignificant trend of comic artists I followed when I was younger later coming out as transgender. And despite this, (among many other things) it still took me until nearly 40 to figure my identity out.

I don't think content creators have impacted my opinions of the set much at all. I had a lukewarm opinion of the set from the get-go, and once they announced 'Through the Omenpaths' for Arena (how I primarily play new Magic sets) I really just checked out, aside from a couple of cards.

The answer of course is "because money" and if it doesn't affect them personally or their bottom line, they don't care.

Summoner of Angels since the days of Serra's Realm and Selenia the Fallen. 20 years later, the cracks started appearing for me. Still slinging spells from the closet, but the internet is a strong tool for connection and expression. Oh, and I am an artist, though not specifically tied to Magic.

Wow, tech bros want SO badly for generative AI to be the sci-fi ideal of fully self aware, conscious AI, some of them are getting unhinged, thinking it’s already happening.

Sorry veteran Magic players, WotC's gotta try to grab those Fortnite kids and their disposable income. Who else is going to prop up Hasbro's rotting corpse if not WotC's money printer?

... religion, a man who, if he existed today, they'd likely hate. It's all a series of writings picked to support a power structure, written over many centuries by numerous authors and translated dozens of times, yet we were told it's the "Word of God" and brandished to enforce their point.

I was raised in the church, but stopped when I went to college. I read a lot of the bible, and there's a lot of parts that seem to contradict other parts, and the modern church often refers a lot to old testament and the opinions of Paul, and really glosses over Jesus, the supposed center of the...
