Many people are saying that he is too fond of Roy Cohn, his attorney and fixer back then. Some have even suggested that he engaged in some extracurricular activities then. And he may perhaps have contracted syphilis from him that wasn't treated, resulting in mental impairment. Rumors, of course.

SF seems to be taken over by an odd streak of libertarianism. It's ok to go all Nazi if swastikas are your kink. Or if you organize an event, that if you are male-identifying but don't have a dick, you may be in for some serious hurt. That's not the SF I've known for years, but sadly it's happening.

Race, I appreciate your sentiment here, but I think you're whistling past the graveyard. I used to live on CA, but I'm now in the Midwest. SF used to be my ideal combination of Midwestern friendliness and watching out for each other, with the dynamicism and weirdness of cutting-edge tech. No longer.

Let's call it what it is: An interest-only mortgage. And those already exist

Sometimes you have to suffer for your kink. And whenever I do, I appreciate all that many women go through regularly when they wear heels and other uncomfortable things just for appearances

And I always enjoy visiting your fair city. It’s refreshing and reinvigorating every time I’m there

Hi Xen. Chris M. here. I'm glad you're ok and it's just your Telegram account that's in trouble. Please stay in touch!

All of those things can be addressed in a reasonable way. Maybe IDC should not go into general funds but some more restricted pots. And the Zuckerberg Foundation should have to pay some minimum IDC. But the current burn-it-all-down approach is a disaster. (end)

This is a feature, not a bug. The federal government encourages the creation of research infrastructure through IDC reimbursement, and if that leads to additional privately funded work, the better. If that's appropriate for mega-foundations with huge grants may be legitimately questioned. (4/x)

But the university can use the IDC reimbursement mostly as they see fit, so restricted donor money has become less restricted. (B) When a small foundation pays for an exploration study for something that's not yet NIH fundable, they often use the same facilities as NIH work. The same freezers. (3/x)

(A) When a university sets up a lab, the expenses are counted when the IDC rate is negotiated the next time. If a donor pays for the freezers it counts and the university will get the money back as IDC when grants are funded. All are happy: no risk to NIH, donor funded research infrastructure. (2/x)

IDC is more complex than it appears. While the current formula roughly covers the actual expenses of a research operation, the main objections have a kernel of truth to them. They are that (A) IDC reimbursements provide a slush fund for universities, and (B) that foundations are freeloaders. (1/x)

Long-time NIGMS grantee and study section member/chair here. I just want to convey my appreciation for the NIGMS POs. Communication was always above and beyond what I got from other agencies that I've interacted with (NSF, NASA, NRO). Kudos to you and your staff for fostering that culture.
