"Bebida sin alcohol artificial"

I'm glad my Fanta doesn't contain artificial alcohol... But this raises another question.

Got held up coming into San Juan. One minute there's people lining the streets telling me to go faster, bit rude when I've just cycled 150km, then they're telling me to get off the road... Then some other cyclists came past. I tried cycling alongside, if I was unladen on a road bike I could keep up.

Also met a couple of local bikepackers. They've only just start heading north, a few days into their trip, and hoping to reach Alaska in December. Good luck amigos!

Starting to see some local cyclists, this guy was out on an afternoon ride but we spent 20 minutes cycling along chatting, at least as much as 2 people who don't speak the same language can

The most exciting thing was being back on Ruta 40 and seeing the kilometres count down

I've not disappeared, been a long week of mostly identical desert cycling but now in the city of San Juan and in a few days will be in Mendoza

Nice friendly tienda "la clemira", loves bikers of motor and no-motor variety and gets them to stick up cards, so now they have my very bad drawing.

Told me this is the end of the vineyards though and now it's back to desert. Offered a bottle of ice though which was great

Found something that wasn't a wine shop or vineyard! Was so surprised I stopped for a tasting session. Grappa was a mistake

The area I've been cycling through the Calchaquí Valley and from Cafayate to Santa Maria is endless vineyards

The road I've joined is "ruta 40" and unlike most roads which the kilometre posts tell my how far it is to the next town this one has crazy high numbers. I had a look on the map to see where I'd end up if I just stayed on this one road and it's almost the whole way south. No doubt I'll see it again

And met the first other British cyclists on the road! Stopped and had a coffee with them, they've been coming through Peru and Bolivia but being on Gravel bikes it's been a different experience and super interesting to hear

They use dried cactus for buildings/art which looks really cool. Seen doors made of cactus too

South from Salta was another cool road. It's a wine growing valley but to begin with the most interesting thing is the rock formations on the side, such as (another) Garganta del Diablo and the Anfiteatro which was difficult to photograph but has formed a circle with some cool acoustics

Salta is a very cool town, lots to do especially eating and drinking. Filled up with coffee again, but more importantly I figured since I'm in Argentina now I needed to go for a steak.

Nice restaurant, I was the only person wearing flipflops

This was a tour map for the region I'm in now, very useful for planning! Can see the road from San Antonio down to Salta along the train route and now I'll be carrying on south

No idea what this is, only appeared for a few km descending the valley, some kind of weed?

Special Christmas treat to myself, 3000m descent from San Antonio to Salta!

Feliz Navidad!

Christmas morning woke up to some alpacas after camping at a ruined house somewhere around here:

Short cycle to San Antonio though

Went on an astronomy tour in San Pedro, I've been way further from light pollution than this and the guide was mixing "obliquity" and "elliptic"... But the photos turned out ok and saw Saturn and Jupiter in the telescope.

Chilé not finished but leaving for now and carrying on south through Argentina
December 22, 2025 at 9:11 PM
On my day off I booked a tour from San Pedro... A bike tour. Started off riding above the valley Catarpe, looking down on San Pedro and getting into the desert vibe
December 22, 2025 at 12:10 AM
The end of the road is the start of the fun

Cool hostel in San Pedro, town itself is very hip with a lot of the workers in the restaurants and hostels being travellers who stayed

Bolivia = Completed. Amazing country and people, the time has absolutely flown by.

On to Chile now.

No need for showers when there are natural hot tubs.
