Where Does It Hurt?—live in the heart of Boston’s medical district at Joslin Park during May.
Every sitter gets 15 minutes.
The artist has one prompt . Just one question: Where Does It Hurt?

The responses speak of “love for care” and pressures of diminishing time w/ patients.

We have a national shortage of doctors, getting worse. Why? Primary care docs have 26.7 hrs of work/day.

Artist Mary Lacy attempts to mimic schedule of a clinician, drawing portraits instead. Nurses, docs, social workers… 15m each, in LA.

Boston up next.

“Sometimes as a healthcare provider I can feel helpless and wish there was more I can do to help my patients. Some patient cases will always stay with me and make me wonder if there was more I could have done.”

“I am a registered nurse in the ICU. What hurts is how the system is essentially set up to burn us out and we have to be safe and careful with our empathy if we want to survive in our lives outside of work...I can only do my best between the time I enter the room and leave it.”

“I worked in primary care where I was expected to see 50 patients in a span of 8hrs. I ended up leaving primary care and unfortunately that leaves 1 less provider. The type of care I could provide was dictated by insurance companies…I fear we will lose so many more providers.”

Where Does It Hurt? has four core goals: STORIES, SPACES, TIME and AGENCY
February 11, 2025 at 1:48 AM
The project draws parallels b/w the role of the artist and that of the clinician. It asks questions about the nature of care and it positions the humanities as an integral part of the public health workforce.
