Trip out to RSPB St Aidan's near Kippax today, amazing views, plenty of wildlife to see, and lovely homemade cake in the cafe.

First Ghosts in the Gardens sculpture I've spotted in York, and it's not in a garden - it's up Clifford's Tower.

CAN RECOMMEND Busy busy busy! There was no newsletter last week as I have been away. I had a weekend in Filey, and discovered I quite enjoy watching cricket after a trip to see Yorkshire vs Hampshire at Scarborough Cricket Club – shame we lost, especially by such a small margin. I then headed up to Whitby and yes I saw lots of whales on trips with Whitby Coastal Cruises, I won’t bore you with the details but it was amazing.

Welcome to the first What’s Occurring York newsletter. What's Occurring York was first launched in 2010, and relaunched in 2020. It was about time I was back. The name is NOTHING to do with Gavin & Stacey. When I worked and drank regularly at The Black Swan the landlord - the late, much missed Andy Cross - would greet me when I walked in with "what's occurrin', Rach?" in a Leeds accent.

Took a break from working in this heat and headed to Pocklington, where I found myself in the delightful Swirlz Gelato. That would be a lemon and blueberry sorbet in a pink sparkly cone because... why not? Stay cool, and look after yourselves.

Gorgeous little tansy beetle, only found around York (there has been reports of some down south but they eat mint, not tansy).

Clifford's Tower basking in the sunlight, all that is left of the medieval York Castle. It was disrespectfully known as The Great Mince Pie, in the days when mince pies had mince meat in them, and were raised pies not little discs you can fit in your mouth in one go. Well, I can fit one in whole.

A whole new look for the website. Comments so far: it's very bright. You have been warned.
