I lived in China for 4 years and have a lot of love for the people there. So I was surprised and super excited to see that our book, The Stinky History of Toilets, is being translated and released in Chinese this month! And as always, Google Translate leveled up the title! 😄

Pearl DeVere, famous madam of the Old West died #OTD 1897. Her impact on the town of Cripple Creek was so great that the whole town turned out for her funeral. As they headed back to town following her burial, the people started singing "A Hot Time in the Old Town" in her honor. #WomenInHistory

Mary Lou Williams was born #OTD 1910. Music was everything to her. She'd talk about having a song in her that had to released & friends would find her at parties in a closet frantically writing music. Truly one of the great musical minds. #WomenInHistory 👉 bit.ly/2WgDVkY

A Google search led to further conversations with experts. It soon became apparent they had stumbled upon a treasure trove: dozens of long-lost compositions and unpublished works from the 1st major African-American woman classical composer - Florence Price. #womenshistory 2/3

In 2009, a couple started renovating this abandoned, heavily damaged house. Sorting through the mess, they found a startling discovery: piles of musical manuscripts and other documents. The name that kept appearing was Florence Price (born #OTD 1887). #WomenInHistory 1/3

Yesterday was my biggest speaking event yet! And I was so excited and honored to bring 3 high school ladies on the #GenerationW stage to share stories of the forgotten historical women that they found. These 3 ladies and millions like them always give me such hope for the world! #WomensHistory

I am so excited for this event! I will be speaking about some amazing lost women, but I will also be joined by 3 brave students that will also present on a forgotten woman. (And I LOVE the women they chose: One a civil rights activist, one a Mongol Empire ruler, and one a prolific poisoner!) #WHM

Spring 2017, I was walking in the cemetery when I saw this. Just Mother. Nothing more. No nearby stones to give further info. Just Mother. No name. A lost story. It felt sad. It felt important. I called my sister and we decided to launch our podcast.

This #WomensHistoryMonth, come find a new story!

Mary Lou Williams was a creative force. Her friends would describe looking for her at a party only to find her hidden in a closet feverishly composing so that she could release the music in her head. She saw music everywhere, even composing a gorgeous jazz mass. #BlackHistoryMonth 1/2

Maria Sibylla Merian (died #OTD 1717) filled her home with spiders, moths and all kinds of toxic plants. Her fascination led her all the way to the rainforests of South America, where she recorded countless new species, 130 years before Darwin! Some of her work👇 #WomenInHistory

I love the Muppets Christmas Carol as much as the next gal. But y'all are sleeping on these two classics...ranked my #1 and #2 respectively (Muppets #3). Albert Finney's redemption turn is an acting masterclass and the Mr. Magoo's music (yes, really) is perfect.

True story. My husband is on a trip to India and just surprised me with these photos. He accidentally came across our book in India and we didn’t even know it had been licensed there! 🤯 How is this real life!?!

This Sunday morning seems a good time to remind everyone that Mary Lou Williams, one of the greatest (and often forgotten) Jazz musicians of all time, wrote several Jazz Masses. And they are glorious. It’s worth your time.

New book coming out in the U.S. in just 24 DAYS!!! And I just finished up the final edits on our 4th book (coming 2025)! 7 years ago, when I was finishing up grad school I didn't have this life on my bingo card. I just knew I wanted to tell the stories of forgotten women. And maybe pirates too. 🏴‍☠️
