Enlightening seeing Jim pull this together over the months. A reminder that real journalism takes persistence, time and money. Worth it for readers, I hope. I've removed the paywall and will make a loss on this, but local business owners I know will agree it's an important topic, so please share.
What’s the story behind those dodgy gift shops on Princes Street in Edinburgh? Jim Waterson of @londoncentric.media investigates in bonus edition of the Minute: edinburghminute.substack.com/p/tax-evadin...

Saw this yesterday and can confirm it is brilliant - like Alice's previous stand up shows, it is consistently funny, clever, thoughtful and crafted in a really interesting way. And this time delivered in a ball gown!
Edinburgh! A Passion for Passion at Underbelly, Bristo Square!

It's a show about writing a book about romance. If you love romance novels or if you have no idea how anyone could, this is for you.

The thread about the Edinburgh Police Box; architectural Time Traveller but no TARDIS!
The year 2025 is an important anniversary for Edinburgh, it marks the centenary of the appointment of Ebenezer James Macrae as City Architect. Dubbed "the man who shaped modern Edinburgh", his work was characterised by a blend of modern form and function with traditional style. A splendid example of that contrast is the Edinburgh Police Box; a mix of anachronistic classical styling and what was then the cutting edge of modern policing. This thread looks deep into the history of these boxes, beyond the two tons of ornamental cast iron to discover how they revolutionised policing in the city.

I'm not sure anything could be more Edinburgh than all this. So good.

In years to come we'll look at this era and wonder why in light of a global pandemic, economic inflation, growing inequality and technological upheaval we decided to make the private lives of a minority considerably worse.

It’s an incredibly small thing and is hardly a big concern for anyone but FWIW Who Wants Normal? The Disabled Girls’ Guide to Life is a trans inclusive book. Disabled women know what it’s like to not meet society’s definition of womanhood. Love and solidarity to trans women, disabled or not.

It was inevitable from when they won screenplay and editing that Anora was going to win best picture but has an individual ever won 4 #Oscars in one night like Sean Baker just did.

Even though it should have been Fernanda Torres from the #Oscar nominees, am not mad that Mikey Madison won best actress, she was so much fun in that movie
March 3, 2025 at 3:43 AM
I feel like Adrian Brody is suggesting he hasn't had many good roles since his last #Oscars win but I think a string of cameos in Wes Anderson movies is a good way to spend a decade.
March 3, 2025 at 3:26 AM
Haha, you can get the American presenters to do drawn out heart felt tributes to all the acting nominees at the #oscars but no fucking way has Cillian Murphy got time for that kinda bullshit

If The Brutalist hadn't won best original score at the #Oscars, I probably would have had to riot in my living room. Which would probably have just meant throwing a cushion on the floor but it doesn't matter as the right film won.

Walter Salles made an incredible film and totally deserves his #Oscar but also it was weird finding out recently that he is personally rich enough that if he hadn't, he could probably hired the Dolby theatre and all the people there tonight to have a fake ceremony tomorrow and win a pretend Oscar
March 3, 2025 at 3:00 AM
That cinematographer also shot C4's Utopia so no wonder The Brutalist looked so incredible and deservedly won the #oscar

Now that Alba Rohrwacher is co-presenting an #oscar is this where I confess that for about half of Maria, I thought Andrea Riseborough was playing Maria Callas' maid? 😬😳 same initials I guess

A network executive somewhere is now commissioning a pilot for a "firefighters telling jokes" show based off two minutes of the #oscars
March 3, 2025 at 2:26 AM
Jeremy Strong has had the same stony expression throughout the #Oscars and I'm starting to wonder if is now deep in character as man who hates award ceremonies but is forced to be there
March 3, 2025 at 2:13 AM
Just randomly singing the end of your #Oscar acceptance speech whilst being as French as possible is definitely one way to confuse the orchestra that tries to play you off
March 3, 2025 at 2:07 AM
A lot of young actors at the #oscars looking very confused trying to work out what a Mick Jagger is and why it moves and speaks like that
March 3, 2025 at 2:00 AM
Ah the traditional #Oscars moment where two slightly awkward Britidh men keep accidentally talking over each other while trying to accept a technical award
March 3, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Feel like Bowen Yang did a decent job of making a case for being the #Oscars host next year
March 3, 2025 at 12:59 AM
I feel like if they had zoomed in on John Lithgow's face while dismissively saying cringe at the #Oscars we could have had a gif for the ages....
March 3, 2025 at 12:55 AM
Jeremy Strong stony faced as he feels he should have won the #Oscar because he is the oldest boy.

Kieran unsurprisingly delightful and manages to give two fucks in the first two sentences.
March 3, 2025 at 12:36 AM
Solid #Oscars opening monologue, B+ except for the Adam Sandler 🙄 and not sure the song and dance number landed. Robert Downey Jr is a bit cringe though.....
March 3, 2025 at 12:29 AM
The most important attendees at the #Oscars are without doubt Wallace and Gromit
Everyone wants to meet Wallace and Gromit on the red carpet of course 🧀❤️

The 2025 Oscars air live on ABC and Hulu tonight at 7pm EST/4pm PST.
