That's the 15 I watched at VIFFthis year! My favourites tied together in 1st are:
SIRĀT dir. Oliver Laxe
FUCKTOYS dir. Annapurna Sriram
NO OTHER CHOICE dir. Park Chan-wook

SIRĀT 📽️
My final film of the festival on the last night was this and I couldn't have been happier with that decision. There are turns in this story that truly blew me away. The use of sound and music rattled me to my core. A must-see with an audience if possible. I needed to go for a walk after.

Divine Intervention 📽️ Consistently amusing, slow-paced minimalist sketches. I immensely enjoyed being present in a Palestine of a different era. The film rebels with absurdist comedy and indirect confrontations with occupying forces - except for one extremely direct scene that is insanely memorable

I love Kafka but knew little about his life, so this was a good format for me. I could fill in the gaps with his fascinating and incomplete writing. Without this, the power + character of his prose isn't conveyed. Standout performance was Jenovéfa Boková - wish she had more of a presence in the film

FRANZ 📽️ depicts Kafka's personal frustrations and inability to communicate, juxtaposed with visions of a future in which he's a literary icon. In avoiding biopic tropes, this fails to integrate his work and worldview and remains oddly dissatisfying. Which I suppose is part of the point.

FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER 📽️
I noted before I saw this that I seem to be 50/50 with Jim Jarmusch movies. Unfortunately the coin flip left me a little disappointed this time. There isn't any particular segment that didn't work, but just some ultra-dry comedy I didn't enjoy or find engaging

TRAIN DREAMS 📽️
A simple meditative story of grief and loneliness set in the rainy early 20thC wilderness of the pacific northwest. Not much to say other than there's a minor role beautifully acted by Steve Buscemi, some lovely low-light nature photography + cabin scenes so cozy I nearly fell asleep

If they don't make a version of this cover as a poster for Brand New Day what are they even doing

Very economical in how it balances a chaotic and bloody comedy of errors alongside an insightful exploration of economic pressures on family dynamics. Lots of laugh-out-loud moments, with inventive shot transitions and camera placements that are staggeringly inventive.

NO OTHER CHOICE 📽️
Best of the festival? Best of the year? Maybe, but definitely the most cathartic in this present moment. Exhilarating to watch for anyone who has struggled with employment in an increasingly hostile work environment (I hear there's a lot of us). An absolute blast.

The main takeaway for me is that Josh O'Connor 100% has the goods as a lead. He plays shrewd charm in the vein of Harrison Ford or Elliot Gould. Put this guy in a noir asap. Here that coy demeanour is put under the microscope and the movie itself strips him of any pretense

THE MASTERMIND 📽️
The granular pacing didn't always work for me, but I appreciated the deconstruction of the heist movie offered here. I enjoyed the first half more, where it felt like a realist take on Thief with a sprinkle of Fargo. The latter half is a slow burn journey to a knockout ending

Loved the performances from the core cast, the editing and cinematography are top tier. It becomes a tougher watch as underlying values of its characters are exposed. The way it wraps up is seriously undercooked though, and Guadagnino takes some daring leaps that don't all land

AFTER THE HUNT 📽️
Even now conflicted on this one. It looks gorgeous and is consistently sharp and funny, satirising academia and generational conflicts while weaving through a minefield of bad takes. There's a playful cynicism here that I felt was grounded in flawed character perspectives

This was the first of this year's festival to make me cry and a high recommendation across the board. The filmmakers spoke afterwards about the constraints of the shoot (18 days in Japan became 12!) which makes the relaxed pacing more impressive. Loved the cast but absolute standout was Hana Kino

AKASHI 📽️ This was a lovely surprise. As an expat in Vancouver this spoke to me deeply. The B&W look is broken up by journeys to the past in contrasting full colour. The memories inject a moving and mysterious romantic melodrama into what is otherwise a more modern story of uncertainty and attachment
