Whilst these are recommendations for research trials, for me as a clinician these recommendations have significant potential to us by offering a structured approach to assess outcomes of paediatric pain management, not just in 1 pain management centre, but potentially accross many.

Emotional functioning is measured using the PROMIS Pediatric Emotional Distress Scales (anxiety, depression, and anger). Physical functioning is assessed through the PROMIS Pediatric Physical Functioning Scale, and sleep quality can be evaluated using the PROMIS Pediatric Sleep Disturbance Scale.

For pain-related interference with daily living, the PROMIS Pediatric Pain Interference and Functional Disability Inventory (FDI) were chosen. For overall well-being, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Generic Core Scales and PROMIS Pediatric Profile 25 v.2.0 were recommended.

The project identified nine patient-reported outcome measures that are responsive, valid, and reliable. For assessing pain severity, the PROMIS Pediatric Pain Intensity and Numerical Rating Scale (0-10 NRS) were chosen.

The revised COS includes three essential domains: pain severity, the impact of pain on daily living, and adverse events. I like the inclusion of the latter, which unfortunately is not often reported on.

These recommendations are intended for researchers but also clinicians and healthcare professionals involved in managing chronic pain in children. This work aims to address significant gaps in treatment effectiveness and accessibility.

The updated core outcome set (COS) identified essential areas for measurement, including pain severity and its effects on daily activities. The main objective is to enhance the effectiveness of clinical trials for interventions targeting pediatric chronic pain.
