This zero sum economic view is demonstrably incorrect. You absolutely can have billionaires without child poverty in the same way that you can have child poverty without billionaires.

Lots of room for improvement in the US…Finland though is not a standout in tertiary education attainment. Not sure why you are holding them out in particular.

To be fair, the returns on the process diminish at both the northern and southern extremes, and in the tropics…almost always dark in the winter there so the time shift doesn’t do much to align daylight and work/school hours

Nah. Look, if you are looking for a panacea in an -ism you are going to be disappointed. Plenty of room for free enterprise, and govt intervention when it makes sense. Look at Norway :)

I think you are getting at a UBI type concept… which IS an efficient way of redistributing wealth without as much onerous needs testing at the distribution point…but comes with some potential downsides too. Some pretty good real world experiments with UBI taking place now…

Um, wut? If we take a pool of money from a group of taxpayers with 50k avg salaries, and give it to a group of ceos with an average of 500k salaries, that wouldn’t matter because it’s mixed up money?

What do you mean? The government only has the power of taxation and does not earn money. We empower our govt. (collectively) to use our money (taxes) for various things we collectively want (like reducing poverty)…what is the distinction you are trying to make?

Not quite sure what to respond to here since it is not clear to me what your argument is. If it is just the question: do I generally advocate for tax dollars flowing to private business interests? No, I do not.

If government is going to compel a wealth transfer from one person to another, but the only requirement is that the transferee requested it…and in fact may have more resources than the person taxed…the would be a poor policy. What has you utterly convinced otherwise?

Online gaming and sports gambling are distinct things though. The only way I can understand a causal connection between sports gambling and misogyny is that it is a heavily male activity, and perhaps engagement in (near) single sex social activities leads to low empathy for opp sex. Could well be.

Gambling seems…bad for the participants (and in a second order way, the rest of us)…but you seem to be implying a causal relationship with bigotry and misogyny…are you saying that? And if so, why?

Goodness. Yes. My post is meant to question the poster’s contention that a good proxy for how gay men (and by extension, I guess, men in general) approach IRL dating is creating a grndr profile. I use a personal anecdote to illustrate my point. That’s it.

Right. I think that is a good and thought provoking counter point! Not sure I agree, but a real possibility! what I don’t think is relevant is anything to do with “minimizing women’s experiences” and related discussion. Nothing in my comment is addressing male-female dating behavior

Well, I think I was trying to make two points: one, I am not sure that the online app grindr is a good proxy for in person interactions, and two, there are appropriate ways to indicate interest, and those are actually happening in the wild…I was responding to a man, so not sure your last point is

Meh. I was a young (early 20s) straight man living in the Duboce Triangle (SF) in the late 80s. I was hit on/approached daily…sure, a few weirdos, but mostly polite, appropriate inquiries/expressions of interest. Even though I had no interest, I thought mostly it was pretty affirming, frankly.
