Humans are notoriously efficient at moving non-native pathogens around the world. Once a highly vagile pest becomes established, it's just a matter of time before we help to move it everywhere where it can survive -- and do massive damage to the native biota. Tree pathogens are a great example.
The top tip here — and this goes for a whole host of invasive pests — is: “do not move firewood.” 🪵

If you’re going camping, get firewood near the campground.

Don’t bring firewood back with you when you go home.

We aren’t entirely powerless in the face of this destruction, but until we find the political will to fight for what we love, and to hold our elected officials to account, the very least we can do is to protect the nearby wildlife we have the power to protect.

This tiny little bird is a climate resilience message. As a denizen of the trees that are endangered, it still goes about its daily search for nectar. We can do what needs to be done and yet care for ourselves.
