Yes. I think it’s fine. When I say the airspace is complex, I’m specifically talking about complex for army pilots - this the need for training flights. It’s also complex

The DCA airspace is super complex and flying in it on a ‘training mission’ is essential for readiness of that unit and its ability to do its mission (which is flying in and out of the Pentagon and other similar places). I flew in that unit. Flying in and around DCA was unlike anywhere else.

The flight path for the helicopter traffic used to hit the east bank of River. Doubt they were ‘roaming’ investigation will have flight path details and know who was off and by how much. Airspace is the hardest part of flying in this area, and you have to train in it. Can’t be simulated.

Was part of this unit years ago. Military does training flights all the time - even experienced pilots. The complex airspace around DCA and the no-fly areas over the Mall, etc is something you need to ‘train’ in, so no they cannot ‘train’ elsewhere.

Flew in that unit years ago. It’s super busy airspace. Nothing odd about a ‘training flight.’ Military pilots, regardless of amount of time flying, take training flights. That will be especially true flying in this airspace because the airspace is busy and complex. Terrible day.

If the helicopter is flying north on east bank of Potomac and plane landing on 33 the paths would cross at about a 60 degree angle or so. The H/C would have a ceiling of ~200 feet or lower, maybe 100’ or lower. There would be separation from the 33 glide path, but maybe not much.

From what I can see in the video, it looks like the crash was SE of DCA. At night in that environment, there are lots of lights, so you might not see a plane (also depends on direction of flight for each aircraft). Especially if the plane is descending in to land at DCA

It’s been a while but I used to fly that area in mil helicopters. It’s busy airspace but always altitude separation in that areas (helicopters vs aircraft going into DCA) where the helicopter routes cross DCA approach routes, so presumably someone was too high or too low
