2 I see God's wrath and judgment as legitimate especially when trying to use it to explain the evil in the world. I experience bad and my knee-jerk reaction is to think of reasons I deserve it. And then I project that back onto God thinking God has somehow left me to face evil.

That is such a good observation. for me as I have wrestled with this it has come down to two factors. 1 American Christianity has been shaped by a version of Reformed theology (Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God) that wrongly emphasized punishment and wrath while downplaying love and mercy.
