“Dancing On a Moonbow” was inspired by learning there are twelve types of rainbows and reflecting on Jacqueline Utley’s captivating use of color and composition. This new painting is oil on board, 11 x 14 inches, 2025. I highly recommend exploring Utley’s artworks.

This week’s coffee break sketch.

I recommend adding a touch of creativity to your day—even a stick figure sketch. These small acts matter. A quick drawing keeps your imagination active; you don’t need fancy supplies, just a moment and something to draw on. How do you stay creative?

I’ve had a few paintings that are just not working for me. Marcel Duchamp would say “they are just retinal paintings” or essentially just “eye candy.” And of course I want more. The problem at hand is how to take these compositions and push through to the other side. The work part of artwork.

Pouring rain outside today in New Jersey, which feels like the perfect excuse to share this throwback from 2020. I remember painting this during a much-needed slow and rainy season. Hope everyone is staying dry and cozy today! #Throwback #RainyDayVibes #NJartist #herestonow #wessherman #thejourny

Friday Fundamentals
There’s something special about the start of a new semester. I always emphasize two things: positive and negative space, and how high-contrast (value) can instantly elevate any drawing, painting, or design. Master these, and even a rough sketch can become something remarkable.

"I'd Rather Be "
oil on board, 11 x 14 inches, 2025

Just wrapped up another painting demo for my class, focusing on still-life as usual. Most of these get painted over once the semester ends, but this one kept its original charm—so I had to share it!

Thank you to everyone who attended this week’s plein air workshop. It was a pleasure painting together and experiencing the beauty of the Blue Ridge Highlands and Mountains. I am already planning a return visit next year.

Jasper Johns numerous Flag paintings. Consider the multiple interpretations an iconic symbol inspires; a flag in front of a federal building, a residence, on pickup truck each convey different meanings in context. Johns’s strengths lies in exploring many dimensions an object can represent.

I recently returned from Great Camp Sagamore. Although I have visited Sagamore for 10 years to teach Plein Air workshops, this was my first time teaching a drawing class. It was a lot of fun and a productive week.
Here are some images from everyone who participated in the week's drawing workshop.
