Absolutely appalling use of ad space in the @theguardian.com app today. Do not call yourself a news channel if you place advertisements over the content. Utterly ridiculous. This ad is repeated over all the breaking story feed and when you remove it it leaves a grey square that can’t be moved.

Last night I returned to poetry for a while, and it was blissful.

Chapel Allerton, as part of the arts festival.

Welcomed back to the poetry community. Found it very moving and exhilarating to get in front of an audience again.

Thank you x

The truth is, I am a chronic self doubter. There is no fixing it. It is part of the strangeness of my brain. The only way of living with it is noticing it, embracing it, and doing the thing anyway.

This week research for my historical fiction novel took me to King’s Manor in York. Originally the Abott’s house of St Mary’s abbey it was the seat of the council of the north. Henry 8 stayed there with Catherine Howard, and James 1/6 stayed there on his way to be crowned. It did not disappoint.

If the Salt Path situation has made you want to read more books about connecting to landscape and nature through walking, my memoir The Ghost Lake is based on a series of pilgrimages of place in the North Yorkshire landscape I live in, around the site of the extinct Palaeolithic lake Flixton.

I have a wine subscription, which I use to save up for treat wines at Christmas and for celebrating birthdays. The case arrived today with a note to myself which I forgot I’d written. Thank you past Wendy, I really do deserve a little treat. 🍷😘

Good morning from my scruffy little writing room. Is this the week I breakthrough my current plot difficulties and get the writing project to the next chapter? Please. God. If you’re listening.
Coffee’s poured, let’s go.

A poem from my new @ninearchespress.bsky.social collection, Blackbird Singing at Dusk. This early medieval woman found during an excavation at Sewerby in Yorkshire. Found face down in the grave with a quern stone (a grinding stone) pushed into her back. It’s thought she was buried alive.

The sound of the breeze in the trees. Light being chipped by the movement. Perfect.

Good morning from my sunny kitchen table where I’m finishing up my short story before heading into the garden to fight the nettles.
