That is so great!
When I was young our class was taught very basic French.
Sadly the common attitude was ‘Australia is far away,why bother, when will I use another language?’ so it was never really taken seriously by anyone and we were all terrible.
I regret not learning more.
There is still time!

I struggle with similar sounding languages.
I spent 3 weeks in France (twice) not knowing anything but very basic French (yes, no, please, thank you ect) and actually picked up a lot from just being there.
But could definitely not have a conversation without drawing pictures

It’s weird explaining to others that I’m an artist (they usually ask whether I paint landscapes or portraits or abstracts).
I then have to explain it… or show them.
Then I’m met with another kind of curiosity!
