“They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
Welcome Yule!“

And so the old year passes with skies and candles ablaze. Offerings given, house cleaned, and a long night ahead.

As we spiral in to these longest, darkest nights on the sixth and final week of sunwait I honor sowilo; the sun and all she stands for and provides.

Warmth, food, illumination, growth, and the joy of her return after times of cold and darkness.

Hail, sowilo!

Frosty evening at the river because some (mean) friends (correctly) told me I needed to get outside for my mental health.

Just a reminder that the holiday season doesn't mean abandoning boundaries, especially the hard-won ones. If they're still going to treat you poorly *after* the holidays, they don't get some sort of consequence hall pass during them. Hold the line and you'll have a better season.

For the fifth of Sunwait I honor wunjo. Joy when things don’t feel joyful and joy when they do. Joy of friends, loved ones and people we cross paths with briefly. Life changing joy and small things that leave you just a little more joyful than before. May we find joy in the next year.

Hail, wunjo

Loosen, loosen baby
You don’t have to carry
The weight of the world in your muscles and bones
Let go, let go, let go

For the fourth night of Sunwait I honor berkano. Rebirth, renewal, regrowth after hardship. Healing and health in all its forms as we move toward the new year.

Hail, berkano!

24 hours later and the landscape is absolutely transformed.

The first storm of the year is my absolute favorite. I love how it takes the brown, sleeping earth and softens all of the edges and turns everything from dark and sleeping to a glittering brightness.

For the third of sunwait we honor Ansuz. Wisdom, communication, and perhaps especially the connection to all that comes along with those.

Hail, Ansuz!

The shallow pools and places where water moves slowly have started to ice over this week. There’s a bit of the mountain that reveals a face when the trees are bare. Despite knowing it’s just the human propensity to see faces I feel a little like she’s watching over the river during the cold season.

For the second Thursday of Sunwait we honor uruz. Strength in all forms. The physical strength to tend and grow and shore up our spaces and communities, mental strength to hold ourselves and others through challenging times, and spiritual strength to keep hoping and loving.

Hail, uruz!

Tonight, the first of sunwait, we honor fehu. Prosperity, wealth, plenty to have and plenty to share with others. May we see the rewards of our efforts toward equity flourish. Hail, fehu.

We’ve cycled around again to the first snow here in the hilltowns. Sitting by the river and being with the rushing water and cold winds and soft snow I’m not sure I’m ready, but I am sure it does not matter to the season if I am.

Beautiful storm last night, full of the intensity that feels so intrinsic to autumn. What are the big, intense pieces you’re holding that community can help shoulder?

Can I light a candle of joy, sorrow, or remembrance for you this evening?

Root yourself where you are, just for a moment. Breathe in and slowly out.

How are you? What hard things can community help hold? What beauty can we amplify in this hard time? What would feel better shared?

Can I light a candle for you tonight?

(Really going to try to use BlueSky)

Attempting to also use this BlueSky thing.

Look at this wild change in the river between yesterday and today. We had a big storm last night and the rushing waters pushed the ice up on shore.
