Professional clean energy geek, very average amateur surfer.

Part-time host on the Transmission podcast (down under).

I write about grid-scale batteries and energy markets - longer content on LI, video on YouTube and both on Modo Energy’s terminal.
The offtake market for BESS in Australia is heating up - and increasingly moving away from the traditional toll.

Virtual tolls, revenue swaps and firmed PPAs all offer alternative routes to long-term contracted revenues, with greater flexibility.

These are helping 2025 be a bumper year for BESS.

The Nelson Review proposes implementing the ESEM into the NEM, but what actually is this? I've had a go at answering that in the most simple terms possible here..

I've also been thinking a bit of how the ESEM and other outcomes from the review might impact BESS - I've stuck the link in the thread 👇

Great article Keira - arbitrage is definitely dominating for big batteries now.

On Australia overtaking the UK, do you have the numbers for this? For commercially operating BESS we have the NEM behind GB, and adding WEM only gets you so far.

But expect this to all change in the next 6-12 months!

Fresh on bluesky, here are some of my favourite podcast episodes I've recorded recently.

First up, Elias Saba from Eku Energy on the global state of battery energy storage and whether this is flowing through to the Australian market.
