a complement of ranks of organ pipes in a swell division of a pipe organ. in the corner are bass pipes, offset from the main chest, which are too tall for the ceiling and are thus bent, or mitered, as we say.

a photograph taken from a rear choir loft balcony of a 1960s-era protestant church sanctuary room. the roof is not quite as steep as an A-frame typically is; the roof and beams are right triangles pointing to the sky. the ceiling is paneled with wooden beams of a soothing, dark tone. the support beams of the roof are of a darker color and are arrayed like compasses marching toward the viewer along the center line of the room until they pass overhead, behind and out of view. one lighting sconce hangs from each side of each ceiling beam, emitting a too-white shade of light and casting a glare upon the handsome wood paneling of the ceiling. the walls on either side of the room are low and lined with stained glass of an appropriately angular motif; the colors are vivid but the windows allow plenty of white light into the room. the carpet is of some sort of a jade green tone with some discoloration, wear and faded spots. the roomba is resting out of view by the left front exit door.

black and white shot of a drawknob jamb of a pipe organ. these are the "stops" of the "pulling out all the stops" idiom. the focus is near-mid field so that only in the middle of the image the stop names and pitches are legible. sometimes you'll see a stop labeled "unison off;" those stops prevent the other ones from speaking at all (on their home divisions — but that's a diversion for another alt text)! but nobody ever says "PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS EXCEPT FOR THE UNISONS OFF!!!" do they?

this gigantic sandwich
a gigantic sandwich from a local deli. they like to give their sandwiches amusing titles and feature weekly themes. this week's theme is labor day. the title for this sandwich is "You'll Never Work a Day in Your Life if You Love What You Do." i helpfully informed the nice young man working the counter that that is a load of horseshit. "you will work, you will sweat, you will curse and you will cry," i continued, helpfully. next time we'll discuss how labor day is really in the month of may. i'm sure that will be helpful.
