I think he envies Dev because of how much better he has it, and he believes himself to be an incredibly kind and forgiving person because he's still able to provide for Dev even while he is.
Just because I dont blame him doesn't mean he's doing anything right, though.

The way he spoils him might be due to the fact that he was deprived of a good childhood in his own youth, and is trying to create one for Dev to somehow "fill that void."

Since he thinks he turned out so awesome, he'd probably assume that would be the best for his son as well. He probably assumes hes a great parent because of how much he spoils Dev, he pays the principal to get him extra credit/ power over other students; He gives him 2 robots to do his bidding.
